We are here! Yeah! The trip was long but overall not too bad. Being in Frankfurt was a little scary. It is always a little overwhelming when you cannot even understand what the McDonalds Menu says! But Hai and I made it. More importantly, Bane made it!!
So we ahve ventured out a good deal here. Let me run over our last few days for you.
Thursday: We arrived and had my first meal in Germany with the fam- Burger King! Haha. Literally we did! We first went to our new home. I love the apartment. I promise to post some pics! Other than it not feeling too homey yet cause none of our stuff is here yet, it is awesome. We are on the third floor with the 6 huge windows facing downtown Ansbach. It is the most incredible view. We can hear the cathedral bells. I will post some pics of the view also.
After we were home for a few minutes we decided to run on post and get our rental car and go to the Commissary (our grocery store). We grabbed some food at Burger King and then went shopping. It was all sort of a daze cause I had been up roughly 27 hours at this point. But we got most our groceries and actually ran into Jay there. He was buying some food to prepare for Kim & the kiddos to arrive. When we got home that night I think I was asleep by like 6pm! And slept through the night!
Friday: I woke up around 6am and was amazed by the lights from the town. It was still dark out and the entire town was lit up, it was gorgeous. We ran onpost and went to the PX (our shopping store) and to the Commissary for the stuff I forgot in the last run. We also went to the post office and then for lunch we went to the bowling alley on post. We bowled a game and had some lunch there. It was really cheap and fun. Hai had a blast and did pretty well. Then Lee drove us home through these gorgeous little German towns. We were sort of limited on things to do since it was a german holiday and a lot was closed. But I looked at some class stuff and started unpacking our 5 suitcases! Jay came over for dinner. We ordered pizza from this little pizza place that delivers. It was yummy and fairly cheap.
Saturday: Our big adventure day. We got up early and headed to IKEA up in Nernburg. It is about 45 minutes away and my first real expereince with the Autobahn. It is crazy to see your husband doing 150. Even though it is kilometers and only translates to 93 mph. Seeing the 150 on the dashboard is freaky!! So we drove up to IKEA and got right there thanks to a friends Nav system. Got to IKEA and realized we did not pull Euros out of the bank! They do not use our form of MC or Visa, so you have to have Euros. Well only had like 40 euros and then discovered the huge lines. So we walked through and figured out what we wanted and will have to go back. There is a form here that we can get and we will not have to pay the 16% tax. So there is a sale this weekend. So between the sale and the VAT form, we will probably go this weekend. I need some curtains and also little things that you can only find at IKEA. Then we continued on to another military post about an hour further called Grafenwohr. It is so beautiful. They have a huge PX and Commissary (did I mention ours is tiny!). They also have a giant food court. We had some taco bell and also some coffee! We ended up leaving about 8:50 in the morning and returning about 5pm. So it was a long but great day. I got to see a lot of the countryside. I forgot my camera but promise to get some pics of the mountains!
When we got back, we ran over to Kim and Jays. Her and the kiddos had arrived but without their luggage! So we brought over some changes of clothes and shampoo etc. We also brought over stuff to make spaghetti. It was so weird to be hanging out like normal, but in Germany!!
Sunday: Oooh Sunday we ran some more errands. We then went to an awesome dinner with Kim/Jay and the kids. We went to a place called La Stella. It was good. My first real German food experience. It was pricey but so worth it! I learned that they do not believe in ice in their drinks. They also do not give free refills. They also charge you for a glass of water! So if you want 2 glasses of water you are paying 1.30 euros for each! That is 1.75 US dollars a glass!
Monday: The adults ran on post to get stuff done. We got alot done. We also had a wonderful lunch at a place called the Cantina. It was really cheap and by far the best meal I have had here. We got back to the house about 3 and then Lee, Hai and I went into downtown Ansbach. We got Lee a cell phone at T-Mobile. It is still so weird to not be able to communicate with some people. I SO have that dumb American look when they try to talk to me in German!
We walked through downtown and I cannot believe how beautiful this town is that we live in! They have 2 huge cathedrals. Got a pic of Hai next to a piece of the Berlin Wall. There are parks everywhere here. Hai played at one right at the entrance to town. The entrance is in this curved cutout at the bottom of a building. There are all cobblestone streets. A three story toy store! Little cafes everywhere! There is even a Euro store (like a dollar store back home!) We found the little things I had not been able to find yet in there, like a cutting board! There is this amazing little stand at the entrance to town to where a lady sells these huge yummy pretzels!! And for cheap. I will add more pictures!
So, today Lee is in a class about 30 minutes away. Hai and I have hung out at home all day and I got a chance to clean things and go over homework. Tomorrow Kim and I take our drivers test. I am also going to register Hai for school. Friday our advance shipment comes, which was only 600 lbs of stuff that were necessity items. Our car should be here too which will be awesome. I am hoping this weekend that us and the Rods will be able to head to Rothenberg. It is a town about half an hour away with a castle. I have heard about this town from everyone!! So I hope we can get to see it. This weekend is a 4 day for everyone, so it would be great.
Well, I will add more pics soon. I am having issues getting them on here.
Much love to you all from Ansbach Germany!!!
